Team from Dutch university visits Wayanad district

A Correspondent

KALPETTA: Though Information Technology (IT) has broadened its scope even in the rural areas of the State, the ‘brain drain’ of IT experts in the rural areas is a drawback of IT expansion in rural areas, Dr. Ir. Th. P. Van der Weide, professor, Institute for Computing and Information Sciences of Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands, has said.

After a seven-day visit to Wayanad district and Hyderabad, he told The Hindu on Saturday that during their short visit they felt that experts in the IT sector in the country had preferred to work in urban areas owing to various reasons and the trend would adversely affect the IT expansion in rural areas.

The team, consisting 13 Information Science students and two professors of the university, reached here as a part of their postgraduate research work on ‘Information Communication Technology (ICT)and Globalisation.’

The team visited four grama panchayats, higher secondary schools and institutions such as the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Amrutha Hospital, Janasevana Kendram in the district and the industrial sector in Hyderabad.

They interacted with panchayat officials, doctors, farmers, government officials, students and NGOs on the implementation of IT under the NREGS, empowerment of rural women through IT facilities, IT@school and the developments of tele-medicine and tele-agriculture in the district.

The 13 students of the team were divided into four groups.
