Soumya in joint lead

NEW DELHI: Ninth seed Soumya Swaminathan stretched her winning sequence to four games after beating fellow overnight leader and second-seeded Chinese Zhang Xiaowen in the girls’ ninth round of the World junior chess championship at Puerto Madryn (Argentina) on Friday.

Soumya continues to lead the table with Romania’s Iozefina Paulet at seven points.

Padmini loses again

However, Padmini Rout slipped further after suffering a third straight defeat, while top-seeded Mary Ann Gomes crashed to her fourth loss in the competition.

In the Open section, it turned out to be another poor day for the Indians. Five Indians drew and Aswin Jayaram lost. Four more rounds remain.

The results (ninth round, involving Indians):

Open: Yu Yangyi (Chn, 5.5) bt Aswin Jayaram (4.5); P. Karthikeyan (5) drew with B. Adhiban (5); M.R. Lalith Babu (5) drew with Bryan Macias Murillo (Ecu, 5); Federico Perez Ponsa (Arg, 4.5) drew with Vishnu Prasanna (4.5); Matias Dimuro (Arg, 4.5) drew with Shyam Sundar (4.5).

Girls: Soumya Swaminathan (7) bt Zhang Xiaowen (Chn, 6); Deysi Cori Tello (6.5) bt Padmini Rout (5); Mary Ann Gomes (4.5) lost to Mthilde Congiu (Fra, 5.5); Milena Herrera (Col, 4.5) lost to Kiran Manisha Mohanty (5.5); S. Harini (4.5) bt Lorena Aiejand Mendoza Velazque (Mex, 3.5).
