DS sees no scope for tie-up with MIM

HYDERABAD: APCC president D. Srinivas has ruled out the Congress entering into an understanding with Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) in the forthcoming elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

He asserted that the Congress had decided to contest all the 150 seats and would select right candidates to ensure the party’s victory in at least 70 per cent of the seats. Replying to repeated queries on alliance with the MIM, he said the MIM extended issue-based support to the Congress on the floor of the Assembly, “but that is an altogether different issue”.

Stating that the MLAs had been asked to suggest names of appropriate candidates from their constituencies, he said since the election was local in nature, much would depend on the availability and credibility of the candidates. Senior party leaders, however, claimed that the party would have some sort of understanding with the MIM.

“There is no way MIM can field its candidates against us. Given the overwhelming support of the minorities to Congress in the previous elections, MIM will have to give a lot of explanation if it decides to contest against the Congress nominees,” a senior leader said.
