Door-to-door collection of garbage has been privatised in the 48 wards ‘Fee will be fixed for the contractors for using the vehicles’
For a clean city: The auto-tippers have compartments for biodegradable and non-degradable wastes. MYSORE: Door-to-door collection of garbage in 48 municipal wards of Mysore city will soon become faster. Auto-tippers will be introduced in the wards where collection and disposal of garbage has been privatised. The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has purchased 150 auto-tippers under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) funds. At least two to three auto-tippers, which have separate compartments for biodegradable and non-degradable wastes, will be sanctioned for each of the 48 wards. Slogans have been written on these vehicles to educate people about the need to segregate biodegradable and non-degradable wastes, and to keep the surroundings clean. Door-to-door collection of solid wastes, with a slogan “Swachha Mysooru, Suvarna Mysooru”, under the Nirmala Nagara project was started in 24 wards in August 2007. Garbage collection has been privatised in 48 of the 65 wards in Mysore. Pourarkarmikas have been entrusted with the task in the remaining wards. Only a few auto-tippers are operating in some wards where garbage collection has been privatised. Introduction of more such vehicles is expected to make the process of garbage collection and disposal faster. The vehicles will be handed over to the contractors who bag the contract for door-to-door garbage collection in these wards in the next tender process. Corporation Health Officer Nagaraj told The Hindu that the number of auto-tippers to be sanctioned for a ward would be decided based on the area of the ward. A fee would be fixed for the contractors for using the vehicles, he said and added that the cost of operation of the tippers would have to be borne by the contractors. Before handing over the auto-tippers to the contractors, the corporation would estimate the cost of maintenance of the vehicle. Dr. Nagaraj said that the people who collect garbage from households should dump biodegradable and non-degradable wastes in separate compartments. While biodegradable wastes have to be transferred to a bigger vehicle later, non-degradable wastes have to be dumped in containers kept at a central location in each ward for subsequent dumping at a landfill site, according to the official. He said that pushcarts would be used for collecting garbage in smaller localities. According to sources in the corporation health department, the contractors will be told to deploy one person for every 200 house for garbage collection.
