Everyone should take a pledge to work for the uplift of the weaker sections of society, Mr. Gowda added. Students from different schools sang national integration songs on the occasion. Shimoga Correspondent reports: Congress workers paid tribute to the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi here on Saturday. They offered flowers to the portrait of Ms. Gandhi at a function held at the district Congress Committee office to mark her 25th death anniversary. They said that she had taken India to a newer height of development. The former MLA from Shimoga H.M. Chandrasekharappa said it was difficult to find the leadership qualities of Ms. Gandhi in other leaders. He said that if the socio-economic programmes evolved by her were still relevant, it only spoke of her foresight and genuine concern for the plight of the less privileged section of society. President of the District Congress Committee R. Prasannakumar said that the 20-point programme was introduced by Ms. Gandhi for the emancipation of the poor and the underprivileged. He asked the party workers to draw the inspiration from the life and contribution of Ms. Gandhi and serve the Congress party with a sense of dedication. The former municipal president B.A. Ramesh Hegde, member of the zilla panchayat Kalgodu Rathnakar, Shakuntala Chandrsekhar and Shamima Banu were present on the occasion.
