‘Sadhaya Vizha’ events leave audience spellbound

THANJAVUR: Many cultural programmes were held at the Big Temple in Thanjavur as part of 1024th Sadhaya Vizha, coronation day celebrations of King Raja Raja Cholan, who built the great temple, here recently.

One event that was etched in the minds of people of Thanjavur among various other programmes was the keyboard recital by 14-year-old K. Satyanarayana of Chennai, who is the Asthana Vidwan of Kalahastheeswarar temple.

He is presently under the tutelage of the renowned musician M. Balamuralikrishna.

He was accompanied by Adyar S. Balasubramani on Nadaswaram, Aasthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamokoti Peetam Thillaisthanam, Suriyanarayanan on mridhangam, Pradeep on Tabla, Sridhar on Rhythm pad and Suri on Bass guitar with T. Krishnababu on Thalam and Kanjira.

Lalitha and Krishnababu also gave vocal support for select Thirukural verses, which were tuned by Satyanarayana.

Beginning the concert majestically, Satyanarayana and the team followed it up with a Ganesha krithi. Kalpanaswarams, with the landing off beat, flowed from both Satyanarayana and Balasubramanian.

This was followed by an old film classical melody ‘Singaravelane Deva,’ which mesmerised the audience.

The krithi ‘Adikondar’ in praise of Lord Shiva was followed by six couplets from Thirukural set to music by Satyanarayana.

While Chackravagam based ‘Agara mudhala’ was a perfect start for this medley followed by ‘Karkka Kasadara’ in Mohanam - Western base tune, ‘Innaseidharai Oruthal’ & ‘Anbum Aranum’ in folk tune with ‘Vaiyathul Vazhvangu’ in Brindhavani ending with ‘Piravi Perungadal’ in Chandrakowns.

Highlights

This was one of the highlights of the concerts, apart from the Mallari and Papanasam Sivan’s Lathangi composition ‘Piravavaram Tharum’ with a charming alapana followed by an interesting ‘thani avarthanam’ led by R. Suryianarayanan.

Varied fare

The team served a varied fare with a judicious mix of old film songs and popular carnatic krithis – Orunal Podhuma & Patum Nane from the movie Thiruvilayadal, a medley of old film hits with Thanjai Periya Kovil – a song from the movie Raja Raja Cholan, Carnatic pieces like Chinanchirukiliye, Enathavam Seidhanai, Kuraiondrum illai, followed by a medley of classical numbers with ‘Yedu thandhanadi’ in praise of Emperor Raja Raja Cholan as the star attraction.

The team concluded the performance with the Tamizh thai vazhthu.
