Indian-made liquor to cost more
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Indian-made liquor is going to be costly in the State. The Excise Department has proposed a hike of five to 15 per cent in liquor prices to mobilise an additional amount of Rs. 150 to Rs. 200 crore a year and thus help government to overcome the present financial crunch.
At the lowest level, the price of a ‘nip’ (180 ml or quarter bottle) will be higher by Rs. 4 on an average and this works out to Rs. 20 for a full bottle (750 ml).
The hike will also apply for beer.
The department is likely to implement the hike tentatively from Monday.
The department is at present contributing an annual revenue of over Rs. 11,000 crore to the exchequer.
The present proposal has been made at the instance of the government to make up the shortages and deficits of revenue earning by other departments like stamps and registrations and to some extent commercial taxes.
These departments are not able to achieve their set targets as a result of the present slump in the market due to global slowdown.
An order which has been issued by the department, proposing the hike has been kept a closely-guarded secret.
