Regatta from today

The Volvo India International Regatta, an event that promises to put Chennai on the international sailing map, will start with a practice race on November 1. Sailors from eight countries including Denmark, Honk Kong, UK, Kenya, Singapore and Indonesia will be vying for the trophy in the Optimist and 29er categories.

The Optimist, a boat designed for safety as much as speed, will see 70 participants brave the elements and the ever-lurking monsoons over a trapezoidal course with an upwind finish. The 29er, crewed by two, is sleeker of build and a bit of speed demon as it harnesses the wind and the waves so efficiently as to skim at speeds greater than that of the prevailing air currents.

Nine boats and eighteen participants will attempt to negotiate a loop between two marks on board their 29ers. Both categories would see twelve races spread over five days from November 2 to 7, with a rest day on November 4.

In spite of the heavy foreign contingent, Tonny Tann, the national coach of Thailand, here for a training camp, thinks he has seen enough to suggest that there is a ‘fairly good’ chance of an Indian lifting one of the titles.

The seasonal rains were at bay for most part of the day and the winds mostly steady, but if the races are to be subject to their vagaries, the participants would want to prove themselves to be more than just fair-weather sailors.
