ERODE: Farmers affiliated to the Tamizhaga Vivasayeegal Sangam have urged the government to hike the sugarcane minimum support price to Rs. 2,000 a tonne. In a release, the farmers have argued that given the increase in cost of fertilizer, pesticide and labour, it is impossible for farmers to sell sugarcane at the price the government has suggested. Asking the government to either bear the harvest and transport cost or direct the sugar mills to bear the cost, the farmers have also asked a share in the profits the sugar mills make in molasses, bagasse, and spirit. Their other demands are for exempting sugar from the list of controlled items and abolition of procurement tax of Rs. 65 a tonne. The farmers have drawn the attention of the district administration to mealy bug problem and asked for help from Tamil Nadu Agriculture University. Their other demand is removing encroachments in Perumpallam ayacut.
