BANGALORE: Though the 54th Rajyotsava Day on Sunday remained low-key on account of the floods in north Karnataka and the internal crisis gripping the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa promised to celebrate the occasion on a grand scale next year.

Speaking after unveiling a commemorative postage stamp of the matinee idol the late Dr Rajkumar, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the formation day of Karnataka celebrated on November 1 every year could not be celebrated with usual fervour this year on account of the “worst floods” in the State’s history.

However, he promised to make up for the same next year. “We will celebrate it on a grand scale next year,” he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa hoped this year’s Rajyotsava Day inspires the people to come closer emotionally. “Let the celebration this year prompt us to make up our minds to contribute further to help the flood-affected brethren of north Karnataka,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Mr Yeddyurappa participated in a simple function organised by Department of Education at Ravindra Kalakshetra in the city to mark Rajyotsava Day. Schoolchildren participated in cultural programmes on the occasion.

On the occasion, Mr. Yeddyurappa regretted that Centre had not made enough efforts to promote Kannada though the language was accorded classical language status almost a year ago.
