ALAPPUZHA: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that a change in political climate is evident in the State now, with the wind blowing in favour of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in all the three Assembly constituencies that go to polls on November 7. Speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Alappuzha Press Club here on Monday, Mr. Balakrishnan said the recent byelections to the local self-governing bodies and college unions, which reflected the mindset of the younger generation voters, also indicated this change in public attitude. With the LDF having around 20 months left in its tenure and still enjoying a clear majority in the Assembly, development in a constituency would be helped by electing a legislator who supported the government, he said. With all the three constituencies facing the bypolls being coastal regions, the impact of the Indo-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement on the fishing community and the steps initiated by the LDF government for coastal development, including the debt relief for fishermen, would undoubtedly be assessed by the voters, he said. Mr. Balakrishnan rubbished claims of the United Democratic Front (UDF) that the law and order situation in the State was bad. Mr. Balakrishnan said the LDF did not have any tie-up with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the bypolls. Paul murder caseThe Home Minister said the State government was not worried about handing over the Paul Muthoot George murder case to any other investigation agency. Mr. Balakrishnan said the government would follow any directions issued by the court in this regard in the wake of a petition filed by Paul’s father in the Kerala High Court. He said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder case was informing the progress of the investigation to the court, he said.
