Panaji: An offshore patrol vessel (OPV), designed in-house and built by Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL), Goa-based Defence shipyard, will be launched on Wednesday by Ragini Chopra, wife of Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra, Director-General, Indian Coast Guard, at the Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) Karwar. The launch is considered as yet another milestone in GSL’s quest for self-reliance in sophisticated ship-building. This is the second of the new series of three OPVs being built by GSL for the Coast Guard. The vessel is primarily designed for patrolling and policing maritime zones, search and rescue operation, maritime surveillance and anti-smuggling operation. The vessel is capable of high speed required for interdiction of pirates, poachers and smugglers, the spokesman added.
