Look for newer markets, leather sector told

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Central Government is giving a major thrust to provide infrastructure and attract foreign investments for the leather industry and the Union Cabinet has sanctioned a Rs. 300-crore leather park in this direction, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said here on Tuesday.

Further, an Indian Leather Development Programme (ILDP) with an outlay of Rs. 1,300 crore for overall development of the leather sector has been put in place. It would help in augmenting raw material base, enhancing capacity, addressing environmental concerns, human resource development as well as infrastructure development and attracting investment and global marketing of Indian leather.

Sub-schemes

Sub-schemes with an outlay of Rs. 1,237.52 crore under the ILDP have been approved and are at various stages of implementation. Mr. Sharma said this while interacting with a delegation from the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI), led by its Chairman Rafeeque Ahmed. “The aim is to provide the industry with infrastructure facilities for setting up leather units across product categories at one place in an organised manner and attract large domestic, joint venture and foreign investments into the Indian leather industry,” Mr. Sharma said. The leather park would have various sectors of the leather industry including tanneries, as well as all product categories and leather machinery. Mr. Sharma said that while it would be imperative to diversify into new markets while carving out a greater niche into existing markets, the leather industry had to focus more on higher unit value realisation in line with the creation of an India brand consciousness. For addressing the issue of shortage of manpower for the industry, human resource development programmes had been identified as an important initiative during the XI Plan.

The Commerce and Industry Ministry had also sanctioned the establishment of three full fledged campuses in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Haryana and one training centre in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh.
