Karwar: The Indian Coast guard got a shot in arm on Wednesday when an indigenously designed offshore patrol vessel (OPV) “Vijit”, built by the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) was commissioned at the Seabird Naval Base here. Ragini Chopra, wife of Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra, Director-General of Indian Coast Guard, launched the vessel. Vijit is the second of new series of three OPVs being built by GSL for Indian coast guard. The 93.89-metre-long vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment automated by the Integrated Bridge System (IBS) thus making it a versatile platform. Propelled by two engines, the new OPV is capable of operating advanced light helicopter (ALH). The vessel with an extended maximum range of 4,500 nautical miles (NM) at a cruising speed of 12 to 14 knots is capable of pollution control against oil spillage and external fire fighting. Vice-Admiral Chopra said the Coast Guard was co-ordinating with different security agencies. He said that the vessel was primarily designed for patrolling and policing maritime zones, search and rescue operations, maritime surveillance and anti-smuggling operations. Coast Guard stationVice Admiral Anil Chopra commissioned a new Coast Guard station at Karwar. It is the second Coast Guard shore establishment in Karnataka. The ICG station at Karwar will have two fast speedboats to undertake search and rescue, close coast petrol and respond to emergency calls.
