Mary Kom, Kavita win gold

HANOI: World champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom defeated home favourite Nguyen Thi Hoa 8-6 to win the women’s 46kg gold medal in the Asian Indoor Games here on Wednesday.

Kavita Goyat won another gold for India when she beat Saida Khassenova of Kazakhstan 8-4 in the 64kg title clash.

However, Sarita Devi (51kg) and N. Usha (57kg) lost their final bouts to settle for silver medals. Sarita went down 7-9 to Zhang Qin of China, while Usha suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat at the hands of Thai pugilist Laopeam Peamwilai.

Special award

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s Commission conferred an ‘AIBA Special Award’ on Mary Kom for her outstanding contribution to the sport.

India opened its tally in swimming with Virdhawal Khade claiming a bronze in the men’s 50m freestyle event, but the rest of the swimmers fared poorly.

Khade clocked 22.45s in the 50m freestyle final to share the bronze with Uzbek Danil Bugakov after having won his heat in 22.30s in the morning.

The Indian men’s team of Balakrishnan Badrinath, Sandeep Sejwal, Aaron D’ Souza and Khade placed fourth in the 4x50m medley relay final in 1:40.30 while the women’s 4x50m medley team ended up last in 2:02.20.

Poncha seventh

Rehan Poncha finished seventh in the men’s 200m individual medley final, clocking 2:03.04.

India has so far won 20 medals, including three golds, to be placed ninth in the medal standings.

China tops with 52 medals, including 26 gold.

Vietnam is in second place with 51 medals, 21 of them gold.

Indian swimming results (all eliminated in heats):

Men: 50m freestyle: Arjun Jayaprakash (7th, 24.09s).

100m breaststroke: Sandeep Sejwal (3rd, 1:03.30), Arjun Jayaprakash (4th, 1:05.40).

Women: 50m freestyle: Talasha Satish Prabhu (7th, 27.80s).

200m individual medley: Richa Mishra (5th, 2:17.43); Pooja Raghava (4th in another heat, 2:26.42).
