Staff Reporter

Tirupur: The Forest Department has seized 5.43 tonnes of sandalwood near Udumalpet on Wednesday. The accused, however, managed to give a slip to the officials.

Conservator of Forests and Director of Anamalai Tiger Reserve H. Basavraju said that sandalwood, cut and kept concealed in various places within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, was seized during a combing operation carried out in the region based on a tip-off.

The search was carried out by a team led by Assistant Conservator of Forests A. Thiyagaraj.

It was only a few days ago, 7.3 tonnes of sandalwood was seized from the same area and five persons were nabbed under Section 3 (1) of Sandalwood Possession Rule, 1970, and Sec. 35 and 36 (A) of Tamil Nadu Forest Act, 1882.
