Mild to moderate showers in Dindigul Standing crops are to be benefited THENI: Despite minor showers recorded in several parts of the district, good flow into the Periyar dam cheered farmers in Cumbum valley and in other areas. Several parts of the district received minor showers on Tuesday night and on Wednesday. Storage level in the Periyar dam stood at 119.20 feet with an inflow of 528 cusecs. Public Works engineers discharged 1,163 cusecs to keep the storage in the dam below the prescribed level of 136 feet. At present, storage was 2,484 mcft. In the Vaigai dam, the level stood at 59.48 feet. Inflow to the dam was slightly slumped to 793 cusecs compared to 816 cusecs on the previous day. But there was no change in the quantum of discharge. A total of 1,660 cusecs of water has been released for irrigation in Dindigul, Madurai and other southern districts. The amount of rainfall recorded at various places in the district at 8 a.m. on Wednesday in mm was: Periyar dam 2, Thekkadi 6, Goodalur 2, and Shanmuga river dam 2. DindigulMild to moderate showers at various places in the district brought hope to farmers in rain-fed areas and respite to people in urban areas. Rain was moderate in Dindigul, Sanarpatti and Natham and heavy downpour in Batlagundu. But Palani and Oddanchatram recorded mild showers only. Moderate rain that started on Tuesday night continued till Wednesday evening in Dindigul. Despite poor or no rain till October, good showers, at least in the first week of November, have given a fresh lease of life to standing crops, particularly the rain-fed ones on thousands of hectares in the district. Maize growers will be major beneficiaries of this rain. Farmers who raised paddy in Thadikombu and nearby areas were also happy, as this rain would save their paddy crop irrigated using salty water.
