M.V.S. Kumar, Naval Officer-in-Charge, Orissa, addressing media in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday. BHUBANESWAR: Close on the heels of alarms being raised that national defence college could be target of terrorists, INS Chilka, a naval academy on eastern coast, here on Wednesday said it was ready to thwart any kind of misadventures. Addressing a press conference on the forthcoming Navy Week celebration, Commodore M.V.S. Kumar, naval officer-in-charge of Orissa, said: “national defence colleges are considered as soft targets. But we have our own naval security. We are prepared to face challenges.” INS Chilka, the naval academy that functions under the Southern Naval Command, celebrated its silver jubilee in 2005. Indian Navy along with Indian Coast Guard and Marine Police Stations along Orissa coast had been continuously striving to strengthen intelligence network by involving local fishing community, Commodore Kumar said. He said five marine police stations were made operational while 12 more such police stations were going to be established. After Mumbai attack, two expeditions involving personnel of Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, State Police and other agencies had been completed covering six coastal districts of the State. Another such coastal security exercise was planned to be held in the month of coming January to assess the effectiveness of coastal security structure, said the naval officer. It was the high alertness of security agencies for which a Sri Lankan boat was captured along the Orissa coast recently after it intruded Indian sea boundary, he said. To instil a confidence in civilians, Indian Navy would demonstrate its firepower, air operations, missile launching and exercises like replenishment at sea off Paradip on Sunday. Day at sea“During the six-hour-long exercise titled ‘Day at sea’, submarines will go deep into sea and then come out. Gun and rocket firings will be done while helicopters will make sorties,” Commodore Kumar said. Another major attraction of Navy Week Celebration would be Navy Band Concert.
