Transport Minister inspects refugee camps

KARUR: Transport Minister K. N. Nehru inspected the Sri Lankan refugee camps at Rayanur and Irumbuthipatti in Karur district on Wednesday to assess the conditions prevailing there.
While 1,717 persons were living at the Rayanur camp, 614 refugees had been accommodated at Irumbuthipatti. The Minister, accompanied by Collector J. Uma Maheswari and other officials, heard the grievances of the refugees at the camps. Most of them sought improvement to basic amenities in the camps and improvements to their houses. Apart from this, they sought Indian citizenship, driving licences, assistance to self help groups, higher educational assistance and inclusion under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments, a release said.
