AIDWA concerned over JUH resolutions
Aarti Dhar
NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has expressed concern over some of the resolutions passed by the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH) at Deoband on Tuesday.
Quoting newspaper reports, the AIDWA said the JUH opposed passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill while demanding reservation of seats for Muslims. It also opined that after the age of 10, girls should receive education only in accordance with the Shariat norms.
The AIDWA said it always maintained that there was need to address the problem of reduced Muslim representation in elected bodies over the years. But redressal of the problem by denying women — who are even more discriminated against in this regard — their rights was totally unjustifiable.
Women’s quota
The 33 per cent reservation for women in local bodies and panchayats enabled a large number of Muslim women to get elected.
If the reservation is extended to the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies, Muslim women would naturally be the beneficiaries. There was, therefore, no reason for any body that claims to be speaking for Muslims to oppose women’s reservation.
