KOLLAM: National Service Scheme (NSS) members of Vocational Higher Secondary School, Velliman, have brought under cultivation an acre of paddy field at Kuzhiyam, near Perinad, that had been lying idle for years. On Thursday, the students transplanted paddy to the field at a function marked by dancing and singing. The programme was held in association with the Perinad Krishi Bhavan and the Perinad Kuzhiyam Samagra Nelkrishi Uplathana Padashekhara Samithi. Delivering the presidential address at the programme, NSS State Liaison Officer Anitha Sankar said if the enthusiasm of the students was carried forward, it could bring about a new farm culture in the State. The programme was inaugurated by Perinad panchayat president S.L. Sajikumar. In his keynote address, Assistant Director of the Agriculture Department Venu said the programme was a contribution by the students towards the food security mission of the State. The transplantation was led by NSS State coordinator Fazil, NSS Programme Officer Zacharia Mathew, Agricultural Officer Harikumar and Perinad panchayat vice-president Maheswaran Pillai.
