News Analysis
* * The first paragraph of a report “One year after, Maoists still rule the roost” (November 3, 2009) was “It was exactly this Monday a year ago when a landmine blast, triggered by Maoists targeting West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s convoy at Salboni in Paschim Medinipur, sparked a full-blown Maoist-backed tribal movement against alleged police atrocities.” The date of the event is November 2, 2008. November 2 was a Sunday in 2008, a Monday this year. As for the place of occurrence, it was at Kalaichandi khal. The Chief Minister’s convoy was returning from Salboni in Paschim Medinipur district. (The report was published in the Kolkata editions, on November 3, 2009, page 1 with the heading “Lalgarh movement is one year old”.) * * The fourth paragraph of a report “HAL team for Ecuador to assist copter crash probe” (October 31, 2009) was “The company said the copter ensured the safety of the crew and occupants. In the Ecuadorian crash both pilots ejected to safety.” The Dhruv does not have ejection seats. An HAL document says that the Dhruv or Advanced Light Helicopter “has crashworthy crew seats and structure along with self sealing crashworthy fuel tanks. It is designed to provide a high degree of survivability. Extensive use of composites provides crashworthiness, battle damage tolerance and quick repair.” (There are helicopters with ejection seats. The Russian Zvezda K-37 seat system was specifically developed for use in the Kaman Ka-50 Black Shark, and is also used in the Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter. In the United States, some work was done on a similar concept using an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and a crew module system was tested on an H-21. Neither was followed up on.) * * The fourth paragraph of a report “Special stamp on Apollo Hospitals released” (November 3, 2009) said that the hospital is the “first and only hospital to receive such recognition [special stamp] from the government.” The text should have said “first and only corporate hospital”. Some other hospital stamps are: A Rs. 1 stamp released on February 20, 1985 to mark the centenary of the Bengal Medical College. It shows the College Hospital building, which is the oldest hospital in the premises. A Rs. 1 stamp on the Madras Medical College, which was founded on February 7, 1835. Released on March 6, 1985, it shows a view of the college. A commemorative postage stamp (Rs. 1) released by Rajiv Gandhi, Prime Minister, on November 25, 1985, to mark the centenary celebrations of the St. Stephen’s Hospital, Tis Hazari in Old Delhi. A Rs. 1 stamp released on December 30, 1986 to mark the centenary of St. Martha’s Hospital, Bangalore, A commemorative postage stamp (Rs. 3) on the Christian Medical College (CMC) & Hospital, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, in its centenary year. The date of issue was August 12, 2000. The stamp design portrays the college chapel. A stamp (Rs. 5) released on May 12, 2009 to highlight the role of Impact India’s Lifeline Express (or Jeevan Rekha Express) — the world’s first hospital train, a project in partnership with the Indian Railways.
