Bangladesh to restore 1972 Constitution

DHAKA: Barring some “sensitive amendments”, Bangladesh is going to restore the original constitution of 1972 which was framed by the first Parliament upholding the spirit of nation’s independence war against Pakistan.

In a major announcement in Parliament, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a strong hint on Wednesday that some of the constitutional provisions inserted by the “unconstitutional [military] regimes” would be annulled in line with “people’s expectation”. After the assassination of independence architect Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975, the usurpers of state power had torn apart the Constitution and brought in many amendments, even by martial law decrees.

The then Awami League also effected a fundamental change to the Constitution by introducing socialist-type one-party rule.
