Tiruvallur Collector calls peace meet

B. Kolappan

Response to plan by Left parties to reclaim lands allegedly occupied by Dinakaran

CHENNAI: Tiruvallur District Collector V. Palanikumar has convened a peace meeting on November 6 in the context of a “land retrieval movement” planned by the CPI(M), the CPI, the All India Kissan Sabha (AIKS) and a few other organisations to reclaim lands allegedly occupied illegally by the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, P.D. Dinakaran, in Kaverirajapuram village in the district.

Besides the two Left parties and farmers’ associations affiliated to them, various Dalit organisations had announced that on November 9 they would enter government land in the [alleged] possession of Mr. Dinkaran and distribute it to landless farmers and the poor. It has been announced that CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and general secretary of the AIKS K. Varadarajan would lead the movement.

In a letter to CPI(M) district secretary K. Selvaraj, the Collector said the peace meeting would be held at the Collectorate. The Superintendent of Police and other officials will participate. Even as preparations are on for the meeting, the Police Department has intimated the district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, B. Thulasinarayan, that permission would not be granted for the land retrieval move.

Responding to a letter seeking permission for the action to reclaim government land, the Tiruttani DSP pointed out that seizure of government land was against the law. He advised Mr. Thulasinarayanan to resolve the problem through talks with officials or through the courts instead of creating law and order problems. “You’ll be held responsible if a law and order problem is created in Kaverirajapuram,” he said.

Mr. Thulasinarayanan told The Hindu he had registered his protest in writing before accepting the letter.

Letter to CJI

Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam general secretary K. Balakrishnan has written to Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan requesting him to direct the enquiring officers of the Survey of India to hear Dalits and the landless poor of Kaverirajapuram village about the [alleged] land encroachment by Mr. Dinakaran. He said the Chief Justice should instruct the Tamil Nadu government to take the lands [allegedly] occupied by Mr. Dinakaran and distribute them to Dalits and the landless people of the village.

“Ensure that a fair enquiry is conducted and true facts come to be placed before the Hon’ble Collegium without destruction of evidence,” he added.

He said Mr. Dinakaran should be relieved of his responsibilities till the enquiry is completed. The Supreme Court Collegium, which was enquiring into the matter, may not get the true facts if he was allowed to function as the Chief Justice of Karnataka.
