KOCHI: Diabetes has become so prevalent that its occurrence even among young persons raises no eyebrows now. Education on the management of the diabetic condition becomes important as the disease gives rise to many complications. The International Diabetes Federation has put forth the theme for World Diabetes Day on November 14 as “prevention and education”. It is a day to understand the serious impact of diabetes and learn how to avoid or delay the onset of diabetes and its complications. Population-based studies by the Indian Council of Medical Research have indicated that the prevalence of diabetes is more in urban areas and that it is growing. About 20-25 per cent of the world’s diabetic patients are in India. The diabetic prevalence in Kerala is more than the national average. In this context, awareness on the disease and its prevention play a significant role. Urge for frequent urination, excessive thirst, increased hunger, weight loss, tiredness, lack of interest and concentration and slow healing of wounds are some of the warning signs. Among the risk factors are obesity and overweight, lack of exercise, previously identified glucose intolerance, unhealthy diet, family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels in blood. Incidences of diabetes in the younger generation are on the rise too, said diabetologist Johnny Kannempilly. Obesity is one of the main factors, he said. Lack of exercise, unhealthy food habits and high cholesterol levels give rise to insulin resistance. Free check-upAs part of World Diabetes Day, the Amrita Diabetic Welfare Association will organise a free check-up for diabetes on Saturday at NSS Karayogam Hall, Edappally Central, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.For more details, call 0484-4007396.
