PUDUCHERY: Chief Minister V.Vaithilingam on Friday launched a scheme to provide insurance coverage to all farmers in Puducherry and Karaikal regions. The scheme being executed by Agriculture Insurance Company of India Limited would cover farmers from the risks of of crop loss due to pest attack, drought, flood or any other natural calamity. At a farmers’ meet held inside the premises of Agriculture Complex at Thattanchavady, the Chief Minister issued application for a few farmers. The scheme would cover crops such as paddy, sugarcane, groundnut, pulses and banana. As the scheme was supported by State government, the share to be remitted as premium for the amount covered would be less. Of the two per cent of premium amount, 50 per cent would be incurred by the territorial administration, he said in his address. Explaining the pro-farmer policies taken by his government, the Chief Minister said the Agriculture Department would distribute crop subsidy amount to paddy farmers before November 20. A sum of Rs.3.53 crore had been earmarked towards disbursement of subsidy amount. Back-ended subsidy amount would be given for Samba 2007, Sornavari 2008 and Samba 2008 paddy cultivation, he further said Mr. Vaithilingam informed the farmers the government decision to increase seed subsidy for paddy cultivators from Rs.4 per kg to Rs.10 per kg. Seed incentive for producing certified and foundation seeds would be distributed to farmers shortly. As was being done in Karaikal region, fertilizer stock position with Puducherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation Limited would be aired in local television channels on a daily basis for the benefit of farmers here, he said. Appealing to farmers to utilise precision farming technique, he said the government aimed to bring 1,000 ha under precision farming in the Union Territory. So far, 100 ha were covered, the Chief Minister informed. He interacted with farmers to know their grievances.
