BHUBANESWAR: Bharatiya Janata Party State unit president Suresh Pujari on Friday condemned the arrest of several party leaders and scores of party workers at Burla before Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to the town in western part of the State. The preventive arrests were made before Mr. Patnaik’s visit to Burla to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of VSS Medical College, Mr. Pujari told reporters at a press conference here. Those arrested include senior party leader and former Minister Jayanarayan Mishra who was also one of the members in the Advisory Committee of the Golden Jubilee Organising Committee, Mr. Pujari said. Terming the arrest of Mr. Mishra unfortunate, Mr. Pujari warned that if the government acts in such a fashion the BJP would oppose Mr. Patnaik’s visit in different areas of the State in the coming days. The BJP leader said the very fact that the police were being used as a tool wherever Mr. Patnaik was making visits these days give a clear indication that the process of the end of his rule had already started. “Similar arrests of leaders of opposition parties had been made during the last few months of the Congress leader J.B. Patnaik’s tenure as Chief Minister in the past,” Mr. Pujari observed. Stating that the Biju Janata Dal government headed by Mr. Patnaik had failed on all fronts, Mr. Pujari said that his party would take up all major issues concerning the common man in the forthcoming Assembly session. The issues that the BJP would raise both in the Assembly and outside would include the mining scam and farmer suicides, he said. .
