SIMI activists with suspected blasts link held

Staff Reporter

BHOPAL: Four operatives of the outlawed Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) have been arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Jabalpur.

The four, remanded by a court to 10-day police custody on Wednesday, could have been involved in last year’s Jaipur bomb blasts, according to police sources here.

The police, however, added that there was no credible information to confirm their involvement in the blasts and anything conclusive could be said only after a thorough investigation.

“There is no information suggesting a direct link between the Jaipur blasts with these men, but we are questioning them about the blasts,” said Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Pawan Shrivastav.

Imamur Rahman, former State secretary of SIMI in Madhya Pradesh, Amjad, Azaad and Afroz were nabbed on a tip-off that they were trying to revive the banned organisation.

Fund-raising

According to ATS source, the four were actively engaged in fund-raising in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for this purpose.

They have been booked under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Their counsel, Naeem Khan, requested the court to direct the police not to torture them mentally.
