In rapt attention: V. V. Ramanan conducting the Regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz ’09 in the city on Friday.
And the winner is: The Hindu Young World Quiz ’09 Coimbatore Regional champions Arnav Chandrasekhar (left) and D. Tharunya (second left) from Vidhya Niketan School, Coimbatore, with chief guest Ravi Sam (second right), Chairman, CII- Coimbatore, and S.Ramanthan (right), MD, S&M Kids Wear, Bangalore, in the city on Friday. COIMBATORE: Brass bands of the Elgi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vellalore and Bharathi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Saibaba Colony, heralded an exciting day for almost 1,000 students and quiz enthusiasts at Gedee Auditorium here, on Friday. The tenth edition of Coimbatore regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz came to a dazzling finish with city school Vidhya Niketan making it to the finals. Participants from Classes VII to IX, accompanied by parents and teachers, turned up from western Tamil Nadu and Palakkad. The hall reverberated with club music as the children frantically filled up their answer scripts in the preliminary round. From mythology to botany and foreign affairs to sports, the prelims had it all. Quiz master V. V. Ramanan, a veteran of a decade of hosting the quiz, dashed in through a cloud of dry-ice smoke. Chinmaya International Residential School, Vidya Vikasini, Vidhya Niketan, State Bank of India Officers’ Association (SBOA) Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vivekam Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Udhagamandalam made it to the regional finals. The action began with “The Chosen One” round in which contestants had to pick one of the four answers given. But these were no sitters. For example, “If you weigh a ton on Earth, how much would you weigh on the moon?” The gravity of the Moon being a sixth of the Earth’s, the answer is 166 kg. But there were many easy questions missed by the participants. Contestants were unable to identify the Yakshagana or name the country where Lal Bahadur Shastri died. But, D. Tharunya and Arnav Chandrasekhar of Vidhya Niketan left the competition far behind in the “Shoot to Glory” rapid answer round. SBOA came in second with KV and Chinmaya tied for the third place. Chinmaya lost to KV, when they pressed the buzzer to give the wrong answer. The champions won cash prizes of Rs. 8,000 per team, while the second and third teams won Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 4,000, respectively. The chief guest, Ravi Sam, Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry- Coimbatore, gave away the prizes and gift vouchers. The regional sponsors of the event were Shri Kannan Department Store, Hotel Rathna Regent, Savithri Photo House, Banaanaa Slice, Vama Oil, Milka Wonder Milka, C.B. R. Masala, Sri Krishna Sweets, Avathar Jewellers, Phoenix Stoves, Hindustan Petroleum, Zimson watches, Cue and ARC Aqua Pura water.
