PALAKKAD: P.N. Viswanathan, Municipal Councillor, has urged the District Collector and the Tourism Department authorities to take steps to protect the banks of the Kalpathy river where the Kalpathy music and car festival will start from Sunday. In a letter to the District Collector here on Saturday, he said that vegetation had covered both the banks. People defecate in the surroundings. The situation requires immediate attention from the point of view of health of nearby residents and also from the religious sphere. The music and car festival is centred around ‘Kundampalam’ and three other temples of Kalpathy on the banks of this river. The plight of the banks could spoil the festivities, he said. Religious celebrations, such as ‘Avani Avittam,’ Bali offerings during Sankaranthi, Thula Snanam etc., are done in Kalpathy river by the people live in the Brahmin settlements on its banks. Performing religious rites has become a problem, he said in the letter. He said that the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has beautified the river side spending Rs.47 lakh a couple of years ago. But, gardens and similar structures on the river bank were not maintained properly, he said.
