S.G. Siddalingaiah submitted the draft in March 2008 Draft lays stress on curbing irregularities in book purchase
Siddalingaiah BANGALORE: The Government has decided to make changes in the draft on the comprehensive book policy, according to Chairperson of the Kannada Book Authority and Dalit poet Siddalingaiah. He told The Hindu on Thursday that considering the emerging trends and the recent developments in the publication field, especially in the overall outlook of Kannada publication, the Government had decided to make changes in the draft and take decisions on the issue of copyright of the works published by the KBA or any government agencies in the light of the advent of e-book publications, he said. The Government was planning to bring books that were not eligible for its wholesale book purchasing scheme under the purview of the proposed book policy, he said. Dr. Siddalingaiah said that his predecessor S.G. Siddaramaiah submitted a draft on the first ever comprehensive book policy to the Government before he relinquished his post in March 2008. The draft had the potential to curb unethical practices and encourage book culture, he added. Checking irregularities in the purchase of books and in regulating duplication of publications from government-sponsored publishing agencies, including academies and universities, were the key aspects of the policy. The KBA would forward the revised draft to the Government for consideration as an integral part of the culture policy on the anvil and implement it on priority, Dr. Siddalingaiah said. In October 2007, the KBA headed by Prof. Siddaramaiah entrusted the responsibility of preparing a draft policy to scholar G. Ramakrishna.
