KOCHI: The current financial year is likely to see a significant rise in software exports from the State, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) State IT panel convener and IBS Group chairman V.K. Mathews has said. The exports will jump from Rs.1,853 crore in 2008-09 to about Rs.3,000 crore in 2009-10, he said at an interactive session organised by the CII here to announce the IT India summit, to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in December. Mr. Mathews said the volume of exports from the State was much less when compared to the neighbouring States. Exports from Karnataka in 2008-09 touched Rs.74,929 crore. It was Rs.38,700 crore and Rs.32,500 crore from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh respectively. The IT industry was recovering fast from the impact of the economic slump and various industries were looking at IT to reduce expenses. The IT industry was helping companies to operate in a more profitable manner, Mr. Mathews said. He reaffirmed that outsourcing activities would retain its strong position in the country. Various sections of society were leading better lives today due to the development of IT. Quoting from a survey report on the profile of IT employees in the State, he said 21 per cent of the employees had parents who were either unemployed or daily wage earners; 53 per cent were from rural areas; 39 per cent studied in Malayalam medium government schools; 50 per cent of the employees came from families with an income of less than Rs.15,000 per month. The findings indicated that the IT sector supported the rural as well as the lower and middle classes, contrary to the popular notion that IT was a place for the elite. He said the IT summit would provide an ideal platform for ‘user industries’ to know about the latest trends and innovations that can be deployed in their businesses. It will be useful for small and medium enterprises, large manufacturing companies, service sector players.
