RULING THE ROOST: The Assumption College team which won the MGU women’s basketball title for the fifth time in Aluva on Saturday. KOCHI: Despite suffering a stunning loss to host St. Xavier’s College in the last league game, Changanassery’s Assumption College retained the Mahatma Gandhi University inter-collegiate women’s basketball title in Aluva on Saturday. After leading all through, St. Xavier’s, last year’s runner-up and coached by P.C. Antony, upset Assumption 73-63 with Anjana Michael and M.D. Lisha scoring 16 points each. For Assumption, Jincy Joseph (25) and Anju Mohan (21) were the leading scorers. After St. Xavier’s victory, the championship’s concluding league phase ended in a three-way tie with the host, Assumption and Alphonsa (Pala) having two wins and one loss each. But Assumption, which had a superior score average, emerged the winner with St. Xavier’s finishing runner-up and Alphonsa taking the third spot. The title was Assumption’s fifth consecutive triumph. The results (league): St. Xaver’s, Aluva 73 (Anjana Michael 16, M.D. Lisha 16) bt Assumption, Changanassery 63 (Jincy Joseph 25, Anju Mohan 21). Alphonsa, Pala 33 (Sonumol 13) bt St. Peter’s, Kolencherry 10.
