On a mission to protect cows

‘Rath yatra’ to arrive in Cuttack on November 10

CUTTACK: Aiming at protecting and preserving the agro-based rural culture of the country, particularly to protect the Indian variety of cows, the Rath Yatra that got rolling from Kurukshetra on Dusshera is arriving here on Monday.

Accompanied by over 1,000 sadhus and sanyasis, the rath would cover most parts of the State including Rourkela, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur and Berhampur before entering into Andhra border on Wednesday, said Rajendra Prasad, national convener of Viswa Mangal Go-Grama Yatra Samiti.

The yatra after covering over 10 lakh km would culminate at Nagpur on January 17, 2010.

The samiti, a socio-cultural-religious outfit, working towards preserving the agro-culture of the country, feels that unless the Indian variety of cow is preserved, the precarious agricultural scenario here cannot improve.

“Indian agriculture can be revived by depending more on manure prepared from cow dung and not by using chemicals or fertilizers,” Mr. Prasad said quoting some eminent scientists. There were instances in some parts of Uttar Pradesh where the per acre yield from land using manure was more than the national average, he said.
