BERHAMPUR: A police sub-inspector was injured in an attack by a mob at Manikpur village under the Badagada police station in Ganjam district on Friday night. The mob also took away his service revolver. The injured sub-inspector, Saroj Kumar Patra, was admitted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital for treatment. Two persons -- Bhagaban Nayak and Ula Nayak of Manikpur village -- were arrested on Saturday in connection with the attack. The revolver of Mr. Patra was also recovered. According to the police, Mr. Patra went to Karadakana village to arrest two persons against whom arrest warrants were pending. He had only two constables with him. But the villagers opposed the arrest of these two persons. The police team managed to escape from the spot along with the arrested persons. But their vehicle was stopped by villagers near Manikpur, who had blocked the road. Mr. Patra fired two rounds in the air. But it irked the mob further. It is alleged that they attacked the sub-inspector and injured him. Allegations are on that activists of tribal organisation Lok Sangram Manch (LSM) were behind the attack. President of the Ganjam district unit of the LSM, Raghunath Padhi, said the persons arrested in connection with the attack were not members of the LSM. But he alleged that the recent attack on Mr. Patra was a result of suppressed anger of localites of the area against the police officer.
