Government criticised for violation of land use law

Special Correspondent

‘Permission given to cut hills which are no development slopes’

Activists say they will launch agitation if permission given to fell trees is not withdrawn

Members of Goa Bachav Ahiyan say a property developer at Dabolim was violating rules

Panaji: The Goa Bachav Ahiyaan (GBA), body spearheading the people’s cause protesting against land use violations by the State, has criticised the Goa Government for increasing cases of “blatant violations of procedures and development rules” .

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Sabina Martins of the GBA backed the grievance of Chicalim Village Action Committee and Concerned Citizens of Mormugao in south Goa, bodies agitating over alleged violations by official authorities in sanctioning permission to a huge township project of more than 600 flats being built by a prominent developer in Dabolim in south Goa.

She said that the Government was opening a door for confusion with two differing plans by allowing exemption under Outline Development Plans for areas marked green and under the Coastal Regulation Zone under the State Regional Plan - 2021 presently under finalisation.

The Goa Bachav Abhiyaan alleged huge irregularities like hill slope cutting permissions to builders on a “no development slope”, cutting trees beyond the expiry date of the permission, subdivision of plots without conversion.

In another high profile case of violations of construction rules and regulations, which is lingering in courts for long, the GBA coordinator recalled how the violations were going on in construction of a project when “everybody knew that all the important government files were mysteriously missing”.

The agitating groups, backed by GBA, have warned of agitation if the departments concerned do not withdraw permissions immediately for felling trees and cutting hill slopes by the promoters of the project at Dabolim.
