Agitated: Protest at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital following the death of a pregnant woman on Saturday. KOTTAYAM: A departmental inquiry has been instituted into the death of a pregnant woman at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital on Saturday. According Hospital Superintendent P.K. Balakrishnan, three doctors from outside the Medical Education Department would form the inquiry committee. The inquest on the body of the patient will be conducted in the presence of the RDO, he said. The patient, Shyamala (34), wife of Muraleedharan of Maavilayil House, Pazhakulam, was referred to Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital by Adoor thaluk hospital on November 1 with bleeding. According relatives, she was admitted to the ward and kept there for three days when her situation worsened. They alleged that the consultant doctor did not communicate to them about the condition of the patient. On Saturday, she was subjected to surgery after which the patient died. Meanwhile UDF leaders sat in dharna in front of the office of the Superintendent alleging criminal negligence on the part of the hospital authorities. Thomas Chazhikkadan, MLA, who visited the hospital told The Hindu that he has been assured by the authorities that an inquiry would be instituted into the issue. The police have registered a case on the complaint made by the relatives.
