HYDERABAD: Though breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women in the country, the mortality rate can be reduced significantly if it is diagnosed in the preliminary stages using latest diagnostic technology, said eminent radiologist and Chairman, KREST, Kakarla Subba Rao here on Saturday. He was inaugurating the first Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation Oration and inauguration of course on ‘Multimodality Detection and Diagnosis of Breast Diseases’ by Radiology Professor Laszlo Tabar from Sweden. Prof. Subba Rao said the course would guide surgeons, radiologists and pathologists involved in breast healthcare, what type of imaging modalities one needed to use for effective diagnosis and suitable treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Raghuram, CEO, Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation and Director, KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, said Dr. Tabar was considered the godfather of breast imaging as his pioneering research in Sweden had laid the foundation for early breast cancer detection through modern mammographic screening world over. ‘Progressive disease’Dr .Laszlo Tabar making a presentation of his acclaimed course for the first time in the country said their research had proved that breast cancer was not a systemic disease but a progressive one which could be treated if detected early through digital mammography. He said for centuries women discovered breast cancer only at advanced stage and succumbed to it but in the last 30 years physicians made a difference to the outcome of breast cancer patients by advocating early detection and through surgery and other modes of treatment. He said after women started opting for mammography, mortality due to breast cancer had come down significantly. He advocated multimodality approach of detecting breast cancer in younger women which was on the rise and complimented KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases for spreading awareness about disease and early detection through modern digital mammography system.
