Chavan: will try to make Maharashtra a global State

Staff Reporter

Mumbai: After taking oath, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said here on Saturday that the new government would endeavour to make Maharashtra a “global State.”

“We would take steps to correct the development imbalance in the State. Our aim is to make Maharashtra a global State with Mumbai as our focus,” he said.

The Cabinet would work towards a time-bound implementation of the 21-point programme of the joint manifesto of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party.

“We will see to it that decisions are implemented in time and the process is monitored very closely. A separate section will be created to monitor the implementation,” he said.

The Chief Minister raised several concerns his new government would have to address. Price rise, acute shortage of water, power crisis and unemployment would be among the immediate issues to address.

26/11 compensation

Mr. Chavan also stressed on improving law and order in the context of Mumbai terror attacks last November. “Several steps have been taken to boost the strength of the police force and its capabilities.”

As for the families of victims who had still not received compensation, the Chief Minister said there were no lapses in the disbursal so far as the compensation announced by the State was concerned. However, he would check whether there was any lacunae in payment of compensation.

Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said: “The people of Maharashtra have given us a big responsibility. It is our duty to fulfil the promises made in the joint manifesto.”
