Mass drug administration on Nov. 11
Kakinada: District Medical and Health Officer D. Vijay Kumar called upon the people, particularly those prone to the disease, to take DEC tablets once every year for five to six years to completely immunise themselves. As filaria was both a crippling disease and a social stigma, proper care has to be taken to be safe. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Dr. Kumar said mass drug administration was being taken up on November 11 to check spreading of the disease. People were being educated to take the preventive medicine. He said there were misconceptions that DEC tablets would have side effects whereas it was a globally acclaimed medicine in use for more than five decades without any complaint.
About 1.5 crore DEC tablets were being distributed door-to-door in the district on November 11 and it would be followed by mop-up rounds on November 12 and 13. Filaria control officer K. Satyanarayana also spoke.
