Taking stock: K. Dhanavel, Project Director, Tsunami Implementation Unit, inspecting houses under construction in Pudukottai district on Friday. Collector A. Suganthi is also seen. PUDUKOTTAI: Contractors executing works on construction of houses and provision of basic amenities under the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package’ (RGRP) in the tsunami-hit coastal villages of the district, should expedite the works without any time over-run, said the State Project Director of Tsunami Implementation Unit, K. Dhanavel. Addressing contractors at the end of a day-long inspection of the houses being constructed in a number of coastal villages on Friday, Mr. Dhanavel said that the State government attached priority for the rehabilitation of those affected by tsunami about five years ago. The District Collector, A. Suganthi, explained the steps taken by the district administration in ensuring expeditious completion of the rehabilitation programmes. She said that as many as 2,308 houses were being constructed at an outlay of Rs.60.82 crore. The district, as a special case, had also bagged an additional sanction of Rs.12.40 crore for the provision of basic amenities such as roads, street lights, de-silting of local tank or water source. Earlier, Mr. Dhanavel inspected the works being executed at Muthukuda; North and South Pudupattinam; South Pudukudi; Avudaiyarpattinam; North Ammapattinam and Kattumavadi Fishermen Colony. He ascertained the quality of building materials being used for the construction. The District Collector and the Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S.S. Kumar accompanied him.
