Marine police get interceptor boat

hi-tech: The new boat inducted into the service on Nagapattinam coast.

NAGAPATTINAM: The marine police station here has inducted and test inspected its first interceptor boat for enhancing coastal security. This would be the first of the three interceptor boats to would be provided for the three marine police stations at Nagapattinam, Keezhayur and Vedaranyam in the district.

The five-tonne, 16-seater boat has two engines and has a bullet-proof cabin. It includes other safeguards such as 20 life jackets and two lifebuoys. The boat can travel at a speed of 40 nautical miles per hour. The engines and other components were imported from Greece and assembled at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited in Kolkata. The boat was bought at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore.

Five personnel from the district’s marine police stations have been trained in handling the i boat at Kolkata.

According to M. Mani, Additional Superintendent of Police, Coastal Security, a 12-tonne patrolling boat would be inducted shortly. It would be diesel-driven and have similar bullet-proof cabin.
