TIRUCHI: The conviction rate in cases of crimes against women investigated by the All Women Police Stations is low, the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Karan Singha, said on Saturday. Necessary initiatives have to be taken by all stake holders to analyse the ways and means to protect women and check crimes against them, he said while inaugurating a one-day workshop on ‘The Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act, 2005’ in the city. The workshop was organised jointly by the Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board, Chennai and EKTA (A Resource Centre for Women), Madurai. A welcome feature was that women these days were not willing to accept atrocities, he said adding that this was evident from the cases lodged at the All Women Police Stations. However, many cases of crimes against women had ended in acquittal owing to various reasons, he added. The IG said there were huge number of cases including crimes against women which were not taken on file for years together resulting in no progress on them. G.M. Akbar Ali, Judge, Madras High Court said all stakeholders should have an unanimous view regarding the Domestic Violence Act. The chairperson, Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Board, Rokkaiah Malik said the workshop was being organised to enable the stakeholders get a clear understanding of the Act. There were instances of atrocities committed against women even today, she added.
