MADURAI: The government will examine the possibility of creating a separate Higher Secondary Directorate, Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu said here on Saturday.

“The matter will be examined in detail. I will consult the Finance Department and also take appropriate advice from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi before taking a decision,” Mr. Thennarasu said.

He was replying to a demand made by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Post Graduate Teachers’ Association at its south zone conference. (It sought a separate Directorate for Plus One and Plus Two within the School Education Department.)

He assured teachers that he would bring the Association’s demand to the attention of Chief Minister.

Replying to another demand of the Association, he said that the government would consider appointing another 3,500 postgraduate teachers in higher secondary schools. “One round of discussion is already over. However, any major announcement has to be made only in the Assembly and with the Chief Minister’s concurrence.”

Stating that the government would be sensitive to teachers’ demands, Mr. Thennarasu pointed out that several demands had been met and others would be looked into.

He said Mr. Karunanidhi had been sanctioning new schools and new teacher posts every year even without a request. “The Chief Minster is interested in school education and teachers’ welfare. If the pass percentage of students in public examinations is increasing in Tamil Nadu, it is only because of teachers.”

Director of School Education P. Perumalsamy said that the Department of School Education was redressing in time, grievances of teachers working in both government and aided schools. “We are conducting grievance redress meetings once in three months and the government is looking into the problems of all teachers.”

He also referred to reformative initiatives taken in school education, particularly the ‘Samacheer Kalvi,’ to provide equitable standard education to all sections of students.

V. Manivasagan, State president, Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Post Graduate Teachers Association, thanked the government for being receptive to its demands and looking after the welfare of the teaching fraternity.

Joint Director of School Education (Higher Secondary) S. Karmegam spoke on the qualitative and quantitative progress achieved by the State’s school education system.
