Carbon-dioxide content to be determined

In 18 villages by the department of Environmental Management of Bharathidasan University

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has entrusted with its Department of Environmental Management the task of determining the extent of carbon-dioxide in the air in about 18 surrounding villages.

The Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko put forth this suggestion at the inaugural of a two-day national seminar on Environmental Bioremediation Technologies (NSEBT) 2009, organised by the department, on Thursday. Presiding over the inauguration, Prof. Ponnavaikko observed that mankind was ignorant of the ecological imbalance caused by their actions, and emphasised that bioremediation was the need of the hour.

There was much to learn from nature, the Vice-Chancellor said, referring to the self-curing properties of the earth system. Quoting from Tirukural, he said, all living beings must be accorded equal importance for maintaining the balance of ecosystem. He released the seminar souvenir in the presence of the Department Head, M. Ravichandran.

Delivering the keynote address, Siva Subramanian, the Director of Vivekananda Institute of Algal Technology, who was instrumental behind the world’s first Algal Bioremediation Plant, made a presentation on the various algal bioremediation works carried out by the institute.

Lectures were delivered by V.V.Subramanian, former Principal of R.K.M Vivekananda College; Latha Ragukumar of National Institute of Oceanography, Goa; C. Namasivayam of Bharathiyar University; Seenivasan, Senior Manager, Tamil Nadu Papers Limited; Saraparwin Banu of Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College, Kalavathy of Bishop Heber College and the Organising Secretary of the seminar Shrinithivihahshini.
