Rain brings cheer to cotton farmers

Special Correspondent

GUNTUR: The district experienced incessant rains for the past two days with majority of the towns and Guntur city receiving good rainfall that is considered beneficial for cotton farmers, who were eagerly waiting for these showers.

Bapatla, Repalle and many of the southern mandals received two cm of rain, while Tenali, Mangalagiri, Guntur city and other Palnadu towns received one cm each with a forecast of such rains continuing on Monday also. With Machilipatnam, adjoining areas like Lankeladibba and other places receiving three cm of rainfall, the winter season set in with temperatures dipping low. In majority of the mandals the sowing activity started only after the late August rains and flowering stage was just getting over with cotton bolls getting formed and this came as timely watering for the plant to strengthen the bolls and keeping them away from the pests that were creeping in. Though the spell damaged some roads in Guntur, Tenali and Bapatla municipalities, people welcomed it. In rural areas, where viral fevers were rampant, the rain had become a bane as mosquito breeding was picking up.
