Prison officers’ plea to Centre

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Nip in the bud the communal, terrorist and mafia elements which are trying to raise their heads in prisons across the country and the State, the All-India Prison Officers’ Association appealed to the Centre recently.

Alleging that the security systems in the prisons were under threat from such forces, association president K. Venkateshwar Reddy, said it was high time the government carved out new strategies to suppress them.

In a memorandum submitted to Union Minister of Home P. Chidambaram, the association members said instances of attacks on the prison staff by prisoners connected to communal, terrorist and mafia outfits were on the rise.

Demoralising

This was demoralising the staff of the prisons.

Recalling the attacks on jails by Maoists in Orissa and Chhattisgarh and by mafia gangs in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Mr. Reddy alleged that recently a prisoner had shoed a jailor, now retired, in the Central Prison at Chanchalguda resulting in bleeding injuries to the latter.

No action was initiated against the prisoner connected to religious fundamentalist organisations by the higher-ups fearing communal reprisal, he charged.

Blackmailing

All these incidents were nothing but attempts to black-mail the authorities and should not be allowed to recur, Mr. Reddy appealed.
