TIRUPATI: The Forest Department observed the ‘Martyrs Day’ in memory of the guards who breathed their last in the thickets trying to protect and preserve the natural booty. The day is observed on November 10 every year, closely on the heels of the ‘Police Commemoration Day’, held a fortnight back. Twenty six employees of the Forest Department have laid down their lives in the State since 1982 (data available from this period) and the day is observed to recall their sacrifice. P.Mallikharjuna Rao, Chief Conservator of Forest, Tirupati Wildlife Management Circle, placed a wreath at the specially-developed pylon carrying the names of the 26 martyrs. Mr. Rao recalled the services of Venkatramana, an Assistant Beat Officer who died at the hands of smugglers at Panapakam in the district in the year 1990. The slain officer’s widow and employed son were honoured on the occasion. Indicating the need to recall the yeoman services rendered by the above employees and their supreme sacrifice in dying for a cause, Mr.Rao announced development a memorial garden for the forest martyrs here. Divisional Forest Officer S.Ramalingam, SV Zoo Park curator S.Krishnaiah, N.V.Nandakumar (SVU) and D.Bharathi (SPMVV) also took part.
