Voicing their protest: Opposition members argue with Mayor R. Bindu at the meeting of the Thrissur Corporation council meeting on Thursday.

Thrissur: The Thrissur Corporation on Thursday witnessed uproarious scenes after Mayor R. Bindu rejected the Opposition demand for an adjournment motion to discuss the issue of a German tourist having sustained injuries on Tuesday after falling into an uncovered road-side drain.

The Mayor contended that she had earlier discussed with Opposition Leader I. P. Paul that the issue could be discussed at the council meeting at 1 p.m. The Opposition, however, insisted on an adjournment motion. When the Mayor refused to admit the motion, Opposition members trooped into the well of the house around 11:15 a.m. Some of them surrounded her and challenged her stand. Members of the ruling side rushed to the well and an altercation between them and the Opposition ensued.

To resolve the issue, Public Works Standing Committee chairman A. M. Krishnan briefly met Opposition Leader I. P. Paul outside the council, but to no avail.

The Mayor issued the agenda around 12 noon and left the council. The Opposition staged a dharna in front of the Mayor’s chamber in protest against rejecting the adjournment motion. Later, the Mayor called on the injured tourist at a private hospital and promised to bear expenses for the treatment.
