PUDUCHERRY: Member banks of the State Level Bankers Committee, in co-ordination with the Puducherry government, will conduct an education loan campaign on November 14 at Vel Sokkanathan Thirumana Nilayam on Vallalar Salai. Students can obtain and submit loan request forms at any of the counters to be set up by banks operating in the Union Territory. The collected loan request forms will be forwarded to the bank branches concerned for processing and sanction. Intimation to the student concerned will be sent within seven days. Students must come with their bio-data, and details such as ward number, village panchayat and details of the course to be pursued. Parents may also participate in the campaign to get required clarifications and avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme, a press release said. The objective of the campaign is to popularise the education loan scheme among targeted beneficiaries. As the Union Territory of Puducherry is becoming an educational hub, there is a growing demand for education loans among students, especially those from poor families. The banks in the Union Territory have so far assisted over 12,000 students with education loans amounting to Rs. 123.21 crore, for higher and professional education in India and abroad. It is expected that more than 2,000 eligible students would be sanctioned education loans up to March 2010, the press release said.
